Nine Hospitalized After Greyhound Bus and Tractor-Trailer Crash on I-90 in Erie County

NORTH EAST TOWNSHIP, Pa., September 18, 2026 – Nine people were hospitalized following an early-morning collision involving a Greyhound bus and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 90 in North East Township, Erie County.

According to Pennsylvania State Police and published reports, the crash occurred at approximately 12:21 a.m. on September 17 in the westbound lanes near mile marker 45.6, close to the Route 20 interchange and the Pennsylvania-New York border.

The Greyhound bus was reportedly traveling from Buffalo to Cleveland with 36 passengers aboard when it collided with a tractor-trailer carrying pallets of Factor prepared meals. The collision scattered thousands of meals across the highway and left the bus, truck, and cargo blocking both westbound lanes.

Emergency crews arriving at the scene found many passengers still aboard the bus. Although numerous passengers were reportedly able to exit without assistance, firefighters said two people were trapped and had to be removed from the vehicle.

Nine people were transported by ambulance to UPMC Hamot and AHN Saint Vincent Hospital. Authorities initially described the injuries as suspected serious injuries, although detailed information about the conditions of those hospitalized has not been released.

The crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not publicly announced its cause or assigned responsibility.

“Passengers place their safety in the hands of commercial transportation companies every time they board a bus,” said Rich Godshall of Ostroff Godshall Injury and Accident Lawyers. “When a collision of this magnitude occurs, the people who were hurt deserve clear answers about what happened. These cases involve real people whose health, work and families can be affected long after the highway reopens. It is important to preserve the evidence, determine every contributing cause and hold the responsible parties accountable.”

Evidence That May Be Important After a Commercial Bus or Truck Crash

A collision involving both a commercial bus and tractor-trailer can require the examination of evidence controlled by multiple companies. Depending on the circumstances, that evidence may include:

  • Electronic data from the bus and tractor-trailer
  • Dashboard, passenger-compartment or roadway video
  • Driver qualification and training records
  • Hours-of-service and electronic logging information
  • Vehicle inspection, repair and maintenance records
  • Dispatch records and communications
  • Cargo-loading and securement information
  • Drug and alcohol testing records
  • Cellphone or other electronic-device data
  • Photographs, witness accounts and emergency-response records

Some evidence may be routinely overwritten or discarded unless steps are taken to preserve it. Anyone who was injured should retain photographs, medical records, travel confirmations, tickets, receipts, damaged personal property and communications concerning the crash.

Those involved should also be cautious about providing recorded statements or signing releases before understanding their rights. A commercial carrier or insurance company may begin investigating immediately, even while an injured passenger is still receiving medical care.
